Yesterday, October 10, 2006, there was a federal summit
on school safety...I tell students that schools are
still the safest places for them to be...and I really
believe that on many levels (and I think statistics
might back me up on this)...but, I do think that there
are things we can do better here to make every child
feel safe...I'm wondering, how can we begin the
conversations needed? I was thinking that maybe we
ought devote some structured time to talking with the
students here about their ideas about what makes a
school a safe place to be--I bet they have tons of
ideas...I also think that building a trusting community
where students talk with teachers and administrators
about what they see and hear is very important...note
to self--talk with some staff members about putting
together a contact activity devoted to school safety
issues...wow, my to do list keeps getting bigger...it's
hard to have so many ideas and so little time in the
day.
