Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions about our lab...

If you don’t see your question on this list,
email me.

Q: What are the Lab Hours?
A: The hours are either 7am to 3pm or 7:30pm to 3:30pm to accommodate different student’s schedules. You can find the exact times for the day by stopping by room 106.

Q: Why must I pay to print?
A: I’m told that the lab was created and funded by Butler Tech, for that reason, there is no budget for printing supplies. The money we bring in from printing goes right back into purchasing new supplies. By decree of the principal, the only people exempt from paying in this room are CCR or KUDER classes.

Q: Why is it so expensive to print?
A: It is an unfortunate truth in technology that products become ‘out of date’ quickly and manufactures cut corners wherever they can. With printers, it is often the case where the ‘ink’ cost more than a ‘new printer’. In our case, our printers are a little out of date and the ink is unfortunately very expensive.

Q: Can you charge printing to a Student Account?
A: Nope. Cash / Change only.

Q: I’m a teacher, can I start a tab with you for my class’s printing?
A: I’m afraid not. We were open to that option originally, but too many teacher lost track and didn’t pay. We’re not tax collectors!

Q: What is the difference between logging in as ‘Student’ and ‘Guest’?
A: When someone logs in a ‘Student’ (with no password), you will be able to access everything on the computer and save files to THAT individual computer. When you log back into ‘student’ on THAT computer... your files will still be there. A ‘guest’ account login (no password) will delete everything you do / save when you log out. Its a fact, that in our lab, computers run programs and internet better if you are logged in as ‘student’ or ‘guest’. This is great for KUDER, web research and tutorials (basically anything when you don’t need to save documents / pictures). If you will need to save files... log into your individual account to save to your own user.

Q: How do I schedule the lab?
A: Simply log into FirstClass and click on the ‘iMac Lab’. You can then enter your request on the calendar by clicking “Add New Event” and entering your name / class and time requested. For more info, see the Scheduling page...

Q: What if I want to use my Laptop, can I use it in the Lab?
A: You may. A student may use the built in ethernet in the room, but only teachers may use the Office WiFi.

Q: I can’t log into my User, what do I do?
A: Firstly, try restarting your computer. If that doesn’t work, let Mr. Hersha know (along with your name & student ID) and he will contact the Network technician to reset your account. If you need to get work done, log in as ‘Student’ and email anything you do to yourself. Email is alright for ‘saving’ purposes.

Q: Why can’t I listen to streaming music on a site like ‘Pandora’?
A: I don’t mind if you do as long as the classroom is small. But if there are more than a hand full of students, steaming music or video’s will slow down the network for everyone in the room.

Q: Do any of the computers have DVD burners?
A: The Five computers along the wall by the door are equipped with superdrives and can burn DVD’s... the rest of the lab can only burn CD’s.

Q: Why is a website that I want to use ‘blocked’, can you get around that?
A: I have no power over blocked websites. You can email Jim Vajda with any questions.

Q: I want to do a certain project with my students, but I don’t know anything about the program, can you help?
A: Yes! I am very familiar with most of the software in the lab, and I have lots of experience working with multimedia. I am happy to give tutorials to your class, or you. Some programs that may be of interest: iMovie (for slideshows, podcasts, or videos), iDVD (for burning your project to disc), iWeb or RapidWeaver (for website design), Open Office Documents (to learn the free equivalent to Microsoft’s Word - free download to anyone on any OS).
